    The evolution of the ISIS’ language:A quantitative analysis of the language of the first year of Dabiq magazine

    In this article we investigate the evolution of ISIS by analysing the text contained in Dabiq, the official ISIS’ internet magazine in English. Specifically, we used a computerized text analysis program LIWC (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) to investigate the evolution of the language of the first 11 Issues of Dabiq. First, our analysis showed that affiliation seems to be an increasingly important psychological motive for the group. Secondly, ISIS has been increasingly using emotions, which are an important mobilizing factor in collective action literature, in a strategic manner. Thirdly, ISIS language presents an increasing concern with females. Last but not least, our analysis shows that ISIS has been increasingly using internet jargon (net-speak), which shows how the group tries to adapt itself to the internet environment and to connect with the identities of young individuals

    Understanding the Roots of Radicalisation on Twitter

    In an increasingly digital world, identifying signs of online extremism sits at the top of the priority list for counter-extremist agencies. Researchers and governments are investing in the creation of advanced information technologies to identify and counter extremism through intelligent large-scale analysis of online data. However, to the best of our knowledge, these technologies are neither based on, nor do they take advantage of, the existing theories and studies of radicalisation. In this paper we propose a computational approach for detecting and predicting the radicalisation influence a user is exposed to, grounded on the notion of ’roots of radicalisation’ from social science models. This approach has been applied to analyse and compare the radicalisation level of 112 pro-ISIS vs.112 “general" Twitter users. Our results show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms in detecting and predicting radicalisation influence, obtaining up to 0.9 F-1 measure for detection and between 0.7 and 0.8 precision for prediction. While this is an initial attempt towards the effective combination of social and computational perspectives, more work is needed to bridge these disciplines, and to build on their strengths to target the problem of online radicalisation

    I won't listen if I think we're losing our way:how right-wing authoritarianism affects the response to different anti-prejudice messages

    Prejudice reduction messages have been shown to be effective through changing norms. Previous research suggests that Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) moderates the reaction to these messages, but it is unclear whether individuals high in RWA are more or less sensitive to prejudice-reduction campaigns. This research used the social identity approach to investigate the role of RWA in moderating the reactions to messages that look to reduce support for prejudicial policies and associated prejudice against an ethnoreligious group (Muslims). Americans (N = 388) were presented with statements on a real, proposed ban on Muslim immigration into the US from an in-group member (i.e., an American freight worker who disapproves of the Muslim ban), outgroup member (an Iraqi refugee who is in favour if the Muslim ban), or both, or control message. Those high in RWA showed consistently high levels of prejudice against Muslims in all conditions, but those low in RWA showed lower prejudice when presented with the anti-prejudice message from an in-group member (compared to control). This suggests that anti-prejudice messages primarily affect those with low RWA, clarifying that RWA likely leads to resistance to anti-prejudice messages regardless of the source. Future research aiming to reduce prejudice should examine how messages can be tailored to reduce prejudice in those with high RWA

    The Gandel Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness in Australia Survey (GHKAS/Gandel Holocaust Survey) is Australia's first comprehensive national survey of Holocaust knowledge and awareness.The Survey was commissioned by the Gandel Foundation, one of Australia's largest independent family philanthropic funds, and undertaken by a team of expert researchers from Deakin University. Researchers utilised the ANU's Social Research Centre for data collection, using their Life in Australia online probability panel, and were also supported by the Advisory Group comprising a Holocaust survivor and representatives from Yad Vashem, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Sydney Jewish Museum, Melbourne Holocaust Museum, Executive Council of Australian Jewry and a teacher who is an alum of the Gandel Holocaust Studies Program for Australian Educators.There were more than 70 questions posed in the Survey with 3,522 people across all Australian states and territories submitting responses, making it the largest survey of its type ever undertaken. The sample matches key demographic parameters of the Australian population including age, gender, education, geographic location. Maximum margin of error to apply to this survey is +/-2%.A key objective of the Gandel Holocaust Survey was to understand not just how much Australians know factually about the Holocaust (Holocaust knowledge), but also how aware they are of the catastrophe and its enduring impact and lessons it holds. This was considered to be "Holocaust awareness" or acknowledging the true scale of the Holocaust and caring about Holocaust education

    United in Diversity, Divided in Adversity? Support for Right-Wing Eurosceptic Parties in the Face of Threat Differs Across Nations

Available on open access from Frontiers Media via the DOI in this recordThis article investigates whether the perceived threat of terrorism explains the support for right-wing Eurosceptic parties and Euroscepticism above and beyond other relevant variables, including perceived economic and immigration threats. We first examined the entire Eurobarometer samples of 2014 and 2015, and then conducted survey experiments in four EU countries, that is, UK (N=197), France (N=164), Italy (N=312), and Romania (N=144). Our findings suggest that the perceived threat of terrorism has a small effect on the negative attitudes towards the EU above and beyond the effect of immigration and economic threats and other basic control variables. The relationship between these variables varies across countries and it is less linear than we might expect

    Investigation of the Effect of Internal Pores Distribution on the Elastic Properties of Closed-Cell Aluminum Foam: A Comparison with Cancellous Bone

    Closed-cell aluminum foams belong to the class of cellular solid materials, which have wide application in automotive and aerospace industries. Improving the mechanical properties and modifying the manufacturing process of such materials is always on demand. It has been shown that the mechanical properties of cellular materials are highly depending on geometrical arrangement, mechanical properties of solid constituents and the relative density of these materials. In this study, using a manufacturing process of foaming by expansion of a blowing agent, we prepared two types of closed-cell aluminum foams with isotropic distribution of cells along length and foams with gradient of pores along its length. We hypothesized that such variation of pores can induce microstructural directionality along the length of foam samples and improve their mechanical properties. For this aim, we studied the microstructural properties by micro-CT imaging and found their relation to macroscopic mechanical properties of foam samples by conducting monotonic compression tests. We compared these results with the one of the bovine femur trabecular bone as they show a dominant microstructural anisotropy due to alignment with the maximum strength direction in body. We also conducted numerical analyses and validated them for the elastic part based on our experimental work. Our results showed that gradient variation in porosity in closed-cell aluminum foams have a minor effect on their macroscopic mechanical properties. Although using such materials in sandwich panel structures, the strength of the material slightly increased. In addition, parameters of a power law model for the description of mechanical properties of foam sample and their relative density and properties of the solid compartment were characterized. The presented results are considered as a preliminary study for improvement of mechanical properties of closed-cell aluminum foams

    Countering Islamophobia in the Victorian Population

    Islamophobia underpins extremist verbal and physical attacks on Muslim communities. It has become widespread in Australian society, and normalised in everyday settings such as in mainstream media. There is general agreement among Australian researchers and community representatives that the concept of Islamophobia is a useful tool for understanding and developing ways to challenge anti-Islam attitudes. However, despite it becoming widespread, Islamophobia should not be treated as a singular problem as it takes many different forms (see Peucker and Smith 2019), which require targeted responses. This brief provides contemporary empirical insights into the extent of Islamophobia in Victoria, and how it is manifest, in order to help develop policy responses. In November 2019, we undertook an online representative survey of 4019 Victorians to examine Islamophobia in Australia. We asked questions about respondents’ attitudes towards cultural diversity, racial equality and privilege; trust and fairness; Muslims and Islam; and other ethno-cultural groups in Australian society; their experiences of racism and discrimination; their contact with Muslims and knowledge of Islam; their trust of institutions; political affiliation; and support for extreme politics (e.g., violence, non-democratic governance). To our knowledge, this was the largest representative survey undertaken in Victoria with the purpose of measuring Victorians’ perceptions of and attitudes towards Muslims and Islam. Based on respondents’ answers, we used latent class analysis to reveal groups in the Victorian population. Latent class analysis is an advanced statistical method that identifies related sets of responses in a dataset that may be hidden even from trained observers (Hagenaars and McCutcheon 2002; Uebersax 1993; Heinen 1996)

    Death Reminders Increase Agreement With Extremist Views but Not Violent Extremist Action in Indonesian Muslims

    Using terror management theory, we examined whether mortality salience (MS; death-related cognitions) increased support for religious and political extremism and/or violent extremism in young Indonesian Muslims. Muslim and non-Muslim Indonesian students studying in Australia were randomized to an MS or control condition. Following completion of a distracter task, participants were asked to rate their agreement/disagreement with another Indonesian Muslim student’s (bogus) statements toward extremist views and violent extremist actions. After controlling for alienation, Muslim students in the MS condition reported significantly higher levels of support for extremist views than did non-Muslims. There was no significant effect of MS on violent extremist action in either Muslims or non-Muslims. The results suggest that reminders of death (MS) may lead young Muslims to be more supportive of politically and religiously extreme views, but not violent action. Our findings lend partial support to previous research in Iranian Muslim students; however, further research is needed to establish factors that can result in increased support for violent extremism

    Determinants of bone damage: An ex-vivo study on porcine vertebrae

    Bone\u2019s resistance to fracture depends on several factors, such as bone mass, microarchitecture, and tissue material properties. The clinical assessment of bone strength is generally performed by Dual-X Ray Photon Absorptiometry (DXA), measuring bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS). Although it is considered the major predictor of bone strength, BMD only accounts for about 70% of fragility fractures, while the remaining 30% could be described by bone \u201cquality\u201d impairment parameters, mainly related to tissue microarchitecture. The assessment of bone microarchitecture generally requires more invasive techniques, which are not applicable in routine clinical practice, or X-Ray based imaging techniques, requiring a longer post-processing. Another important aspect is the presence of local damage in the bony tissue that may also affect the prediction of bone strength and fracture risk. To provide a more comprehensive analysis of bone quality and quantity, and to assess the effect of damage, here we adopt a framework that includes clinical, morphological, and mechanical analyses, carried out by means of DXA, \u3bcCT and mechanical compressive testing, respectively. This study has been carried out on trabecular bones, taken from porcine trabecular vertebrae, for the similarity with human lumbar spine. This study confirms that no single method can provide a complete characterization of bone tissue, and the combination of complementary characterization techniques is required for an accurate and exhaustive description of bone status. BMD and TBS have shown to be complementary parameters to assess bone strength, the former assessing the bone quantity and resistance to damage, and the latter the bone quality and the presence of damage accumulation without being able to predict the risk of fracture
